Islamic Azad University’s Researchers Produce Mulch from Effluents of Industrial Units, Water Purification Process

TEHRAN (ANA)- A team of inventors and researchers from Islamic Azad University’s Behshahr branch in Northern Iran succeeded in producing mulch from effluents left by the industrial units and purification of sea water and urban sewage.

Meqdad Rahimi, a member of the Faculty of Mechanics Department of Islamic Azad University’s Behshahr branch and the director of the incubator center of the university, told ANA that the project implemented by the innovative team is titled "extraction of mulch from urban waste water and polluted water by combined method of reverse osmosis and ultrasonic”.

“The produced mulch can be used for anti-desertification plans and the product is in the initial test sample stage,” he added.

Rahimi underlined that the method used by the Iranian researchers regarding the remaining materials resulting from the purification process is different from previous methods used by other countries (50% remaining).

A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area.

A mulch is usually, but not exclusively, organic in nature. It may be permanent (e.g. plastic sheeting) or temporary (e.g. bark chips). It may be applied to bare soil or around existing plants. Mulches of manure or compost will be incorporated naturally into the soil by the activity of worms and other organisms. The process is used both in commercial crop production and in gardening, and when applied correctly, can improve soil productivity.

Living mulches include moss lawns and other ground covers.
