New Method by Iranian Scientists Harnesses Drug-Resistant Cancer Cells

TEHRAN (ANA)- The caretaker of the research and technology department of Islamic Azad University’s Ardabil branch announced that researchers of the university have found a method to control the growth of cancer cells which show resistance to drugs.

“The researchers of Ardabil branch found a new solution to inhibit drug-resistant cancer cells,” Mohammad Za’eifizadeh told ANA.

“As a result of this research, exosome transporters transmit signaling pathways to cancer cells by combining their inhibitory factors, including micro RNA and small molecules,” he added.

Za’eifizadeh explained that the findings under the title of ‘synthesis of liposomes containing apoptosis-inducing biomolecules (ApoMexosome) through coumarin to inhibit cancer cells’ have made it possible to control MDR multi-drug resistant cancer cells.

In a relevant development last year, Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company produced a CDP system which diagnoses the presence of pre-neoplastic/neoplastic cells in either internal or external margins of the cancerous tissues of patients during breast cancer surgery. The system lively determines the H2O2 released from cancer or atypical cells, through reverse Warburg effect and hypoxia assisted glycolysis pathways, in quantitative electrochemical manner.

Checking the cavity-side margins during surgery for breast cancer patients is critical to ensure the definitive removal of suspicious and high-risk lesions with minimal damage to normal tissue. Remaining cancer cells in the breast causes re-surgeries and inevitable post-surgical treatments, which will have several side effects.
