The knowledge-based company which is stationed at the incubator center of Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran produced the single-photon detector based on semiconductor avalanche photodiodes (APD).

Shahab Karimi, the executive director of the company, described the single photon detector as one of the latest products of the company, saying, “This device can detect single photons with high accuracy for the users, and this capability has various applications, including quantum physics, lidar (laser imaging, detection, and ranging), quantum imaging, and quantum spectroscopies.

He underlined that the device is used in research, medical and military areas, adding, “It is capable of imaging with ultrahigh accuracy.”

Single photon imaging requires at minimum just one detector fixed in one position to obtain a two-dimensional (2D) projection of a three-dimensional (3D) radiopharmaceutical distribution. A typical imaging system suitable for this task is the gamma camera. A typical gamma camera consists of a collimator that limits the angle of incidence of the detected photons on the detector to a specific direction, for instance around 90° for a parallel hole collimator.

The deposited energy is converted by a scintillating crystal to visible light which travels through the crystal and the light guide towards a set of photomultipliers (PMTs) containing a photocathode which converts the optical photons into electrons that are transported over dynodes towards an Anger logic readout for position and energy signal calculation.
